Spreads and tarot

What spreads do you guys use? What about decks? Are there any decks or spreads that you would like to use or learn?

I have about two tarot decks but the one I use only is the Revelations Tarot deck, which is really nice. Otherwise, it's just cartomancy for me. The spreads I do are really simple, they use up to either 9 cards or 15.

What do you use? Also what do you think this comm could do to improve?

I have 2 tarot decks, one being the Druidcraft Tarot, and the other being Tarot of a Moon Garden.

The tarot of a Moon Garden deck is my favourite and the one I use pretty much all the time. It was my first deck when I started out reading tarot about 8 years ago. It's so beautiful: http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/tarot-of-a-moon-garden/ <3

I still to this day use the same basic spread I always hav done - 3 cards, one for the past, one for the present and one for the future. I'd love to learn the Celtic Cross spread someday, but it's finding the time to sit and study/practice enough to be able to read the cards in such an advanced way to what I'm used to. Maybe one day.. ^^

As for improving the comm, maybe people might be more active if there was a monthly theme or something? I'm not sure how it might work for this particualr comm, but if people throw some ideas together maybe it could ^^

I have never really done the celtic cross successfully >.<

I guess there could be a monthly theme but currently I'm the only one who is running it. However, I am totally open for ideas. A month for tarot, a month for dreams, a month for tea leaves, a month for clairvoyance, that would be a treat!

Oh I have the revelations, it has great colors. I dont usually use it though I found it to be a downer, maybe because its really dependent on reverses and I never read with those. I like to do spreads in 9s too. My usual deck is the Thoth. I also have a Marseilles deck, I like it because its too simple to really dislike. And I think its good for learning, because you really have to have each card really clear conceptually instead of depending on artwork. I want an egytian-themed deck but I havent found one I really like yet. Oh I also like the joseph vargo deck, I like the cheesey imagery but its also really sincere. But yes my "real" deck is the Thoth.

As far as the comm, I think regularly having discussion questions could be good. It might encourage people to post more overall.

I think there is an egyptian themed deck out there but I'm not sure if it's from Lo Scarebo or not (don't really like them tooooo much). I'm not sure if I have seen the Marseilles deck tho but I like the Revelations for the reverses because I use them so much. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

I agree with the discussion questions, it is getting more people.

At the moment I only have this "Beginner's Deck" that I got ages ago and actually gives you possible interpretations on the cards themselves. I'm actually in the market for a new set and I saw the Deviant Moon tarot cards in person a week ago and I can't seem to shake them from my mind. I usually use the 3 card past/present/future spread as well and only use the Celtic Cross for other people. I don't usually need that kind of information for myself.

Wow! I'm too scared to read the Deviant Moon deck! The artwork frightens me actually!.... >.> Aren't I a sad thing?
27th-Jan-2010 01:56 am (UTC)
No. Everyone has their comfort levels. I know when I first saw them they frightened me too but, I think that that is why I can't get them out of mind. I'm really focusing this year on focusing on dealing with the things that scare me, the subconscious parts of me that I need to deal with to move on with my life...

That is rather wise. I can do that with some things but others I'm just a terrible case.

I use the "Celtic Cross" spread usually, or the three card spread of past, present, future with my own sort of layered effect when the question's answer isn't clear.

I only have one deck at any given time, not by my own choice but because when I get a new deck my old deck apparently takes it as an insult and vanishes. I've a a rider waite mini deck, a unicorn deck, and the herbal tarot (which is my current deck and I'm very happy with it).

As for improvements, I think we should have a "card of the week." Maybe the mod(s) draw a card from their deck and share its meaning as well as various deck's depictions of it, and then we do the same and share just our individual deck's depiction, as well as what we'll take from the meaning for that week. It might be a fun way for some to get to know their deck better, and to share what the fates are guiding us to do.

Seems a lot of ppl like the Celtic Cross. Makes me thing I ought to really go out there and learn it.

I'm the only mod here since the comm is pretty small but I think card of the week could be something, or even diversify it as the month theme kinda (using the idea from midnight_gypsy), like pull a card from the deck or a line on the hand and go from there with your idea. Something like that I guess?

Sounds good to me.

I currently am still learning tarot ,so i use rider waite, and for fun i use fairy tarot by doreen virtue - theres 40 cards, they always have positive messages - but its not an indepth set.
once i have got my head around meanings and what have you i will look to other sets to use.

i would like to know more about spreads - i only know a handful.
26th-Jan-2010 05:39 am (UTC)
Ditto about the spreads. Maybe I could have that posted up here sometimes but everyone is free to post their own whenever they like.

I use a 5 card spread and currently my go-to deck is The Tarot Art Nouveau (http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/art-nouveau/index.shtml) Not the easiest deck to read with but the imagery is so beautiful and it speaks to me.

My first deck was The Victoria Regina Tarot (http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/victoria-regina/index.shtml) and now that I know how to read a little better, I'd like to try again with them. Sad thing is that they're in storage. :(

Both of those decks are on my "to buy someday" list. So pretty.

I have two decks:

Medieval Scapini Tarot
http://www.usgamesinc.com/product.php?productid=1005&cat=1&page=7

Hanson-Roberts Tarot
http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/hanson-roberts/

The Scapini Tarot was my first deck (before that, I borrowed my boyfriend's Raider-Waite). I bought it because it had a Renaissance look to it. I find that every deck I use has a personality of its own, though, and this one's got a bad attitude. Every card has some sort of negative spin on it, and reversed the meaning just gets worse. It did have one good quality, in that it was always pretty blunt when it came to readings.

I got the Hanson-Roberts deck about a year afterward, and I've been using it ever since. The images stick pretty close to Rider-Waite, only a little bit more... like a coloring book, since all the artwork seems to be done in colored pencils. It's a much nicer deck, I think. Happier-looking images in general, plus lots of details giving allusions to the meaning.

As for spreads, I tend to stick with the Celtic Cross. Sometimes I'll use the 3-card "past, present, future" one, as well.

Oh, and it may seem weird, but I'll use them to play Solitare sometimes, too. I use nine columns instead of the usual seven, to allow for the major arcana, and any cards leftover after the game I'll use for a reading.
26th-Jan-2010 05:40 am (UTC)
That is totally interesting, the solitare bit!

I love the Osho Zen Tarot and the Aquarian Tarot decks - they're both so visually stimulating to me. I usually use the Osho deck to read for others, and I use the images as a kind of daily meditation or reflection. I love me Aquarian deck, but it's a much more personal deck and I usually only use it for my own readings. I also keep a set of runes - it's weird, but I find that reading for men is a lot easier if I use runes in conjunction with my Osho Zen (or sometimes just the runes) and that my Zen Tarot will only really read properly for women, for the most part. O_O Does anyone else have a similar issue?

I know I don't but I know someone else may. I guess the masculinity of stone reading of runes speak to you and the softness/feminity of zen using the tarot speaks to you as well. I think that's really cool actually.
